Gravy Analytics is a location data broker that collects and sells precise GPS-level location data from millions of mobile devices. In January 2025, the FTC ordered Gravy Analytics to stop selling sensitive location data — but your existing data may still be in their systems. Here's how to opt out and reclaim your location privacy.
What Is Gravy Analytics?
Gravy Analytics (now part of Unacast) is a data broker that specializes in collecting and monetizing location data from mobile devices. The company gathers GPS coordinates, device identifiers, and movement patterns from smartphone apps and sells this data to businesses for advertising, analytics, and other purposes.
What makes Gravy Analytics particularly concerning is the precision and sensitivity of the data they collect. Your location data can reveal:
- Where you live and work
- Which doctors you visit
- What places of worship you attend
- Which political rallies or protests you've been to
- Where your children go to school
- Your daily routines and habits
FTC Action Against Gravy Analytics
On January 14, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission issued a final order against Gravy Analytics, requiring the company to stop selling, disclosing, or using sensitive location data within 90 days — unless it obtains affirmative opt-in consent from consumers. This was one of the FTC's strongest actions ever against a location data broker.

How to Find Your Mobile Advertising ID
Gravy Analytics tracks your data using your mobile advertising ID (also called MAID, IDFA on iPhone, or GAID on Android). You'll need this to complete your opt-out request.
On iPhone (IDFA)
- Open Settings
- Tap Privacy & Security
- Tap Tracking
- If "Allow Apps to Request to Track" is turned on, your IDFA is active
- To find the actual ID, you can use a free app like "My Device ID by AppsFlyer" from the App Store
On Android (GAID)
- Open Settings
- Tap Privacy (or Google)
- Tap Ads
- Your advertising ID will be displayed on this screen
Reset or Disable Your Advertising ID
Beyond opting out of Gravy Analytics, you should consider resetting or disabling your mobile advertising ID entirely. On iPhone, turn off "Allow Apps to Request to Track" in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. On Android, go to Settings > Privacy > Ads and select "Delete advertising ID." This prevents future location tracking by all data brokers, not just Gravy Analytics.
What Happens After You Opt Out
Once Gravy Analytics receives your opt-out request, they will remove all data in their data sets associated with your mobile advertising ID. However, keep in mind:
- Processing time: It may take several weeks for your data to be fully removed.
- Re-collection is possible: If you don't also disable or reset your advertising ID, your data could be collected again through other apps.
- Other brokers still have your data: Gravy Analytics is just one of many location data brokers. Companies like X-Mode Social (now Outlogic), SafeGraph, and Placer.ai also collect and sell location data.
The Bigger Picture: Location Data Brokers
Gravy Analytics is part of a massive industry that tracks the movements of hundreds of millions of people through their smartphones. In early 2025, Gravy Analytics itself suffered a data breach that exposed location data from popular apps, demonstrating just how vulnerable this information can be.
Opting out of one broker is an important first step, but comprehensive protection requires addressing the entire ecosystem of data brokers that may have your information.
