Every time you browse the web, use an app, or make a purchase, dozens of companies are tracking your behavior to serve you targeted ads. Your browsing history, location data, purchase records, and personal interests are compiled into a profile that advertisers use to follow you across the internet. Here's how to opt out and take back your privacy.
How Targeted Advertising Works
Targeted advertising relies on a massive ecosystem of data collection. Here's how your information flows:
- First-party tracking: Websites track what you view, click, and buy on their own platforms (Google, Amazon, Facebook).
- Third-party cookies: Advertising networks place tracking cookies across millions of websites to follow your browsing activity.
- Device fingerprinting: Even without cookies, advertisers can identify you using your browser type, screen resolution, installed fonts, and other device characteristics.
- Data brokers: Companies like Acxiom, Oracle Data Cloud, and Epsilon sell your offline data (purchases, income, interests) to advertisers for targeting.
- Mobile advertising IDs: Your phone has a unique advertising identifier that apps use to track your behavior across different apps.
Opt Out of Major Platforms

- Under "Ad Settings," set each category to "Not Allowed":
- Ads based on data from partners

Use Industry-Wide Opt-Out Tools
These tools let you opt out of multiple ad networks at once:
- Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA): Visit optout.aboutads.info to opt out of targeted ads from 100+ participating companies.
- Network Advertising Initiative (NAI): Note that NAI ceased its cookie-based opt-out tool in September 2025. However, you can still visit thenai.org/how-to-opt-out for guidance on opting out of member companies individually.
- Your Online Choices (EU): Visit youronlinechoices.eu for European ad network opt-outs.
Important: These Opt-Outs Use Cookies
Industry opt-out tools work by placing a special "opt-out cookie" in your browser. If you clear your cookies, you'll lose these opt-outs and need to re-submit them. Some browser extensions like the DAA's "Protect My Choices" can help preserve your opt-out preferences.
Browser and Extension Settings
Strengthen your defenses at the browser level:
- Enable "Do Not Track": Most browsers have this setting, though compliance by websites is voluntary.
- Use Global Privacy Control (GPC): This newer standard is legally enforceable in California and other states. Enable it in Firefox, Brave, or via extensions like Privacy Badger.
- Install an ad/tracker blocker: uBlock Origin is the gold standard. It blocks tracking scripts before they load.
- Use a privacy-focused browser: Firefox with strict tracking protection, Brave, or DuckDuckGo's browser block trackers by default.
- Block third-party cookies: Most modern browsers now offer this option in their privacy settings.
Warning: Opting Out Doesn't Stop Data Collection
Most opt-out mechanisms only stop ads from being personalized — they don't stop companies from collecting your data. You'll still see ads, and your data may still be gathered for other purposes like analytics and product development. True privacy requires reducing data collection at the source.
Use Privacy Laws to Your Advantage
Several privacy laws give you the right to opt out of data sales and targeted advertising:
- CCPA/CPRA (California): Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. Look for "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" links on websites.
- VCDPA (Virginia), CPA (Colorado), CTDPA (Connecticut): Right to opt out of targeted advertising and data sales.
- GDPR (Europe): Companies must get your explicit consent before tracking you for advertising purposes.
- Universal Opt-Out Mechanisms (UOOM): As of 2025, at least 10 states — including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, and Texas — require websites to honor browser-level opt-out signals like Global Privacy Control (GPC). Enable GPC in your browser and these sites must legally respect it.
The Root of the Problem: Data Brokers
Much of the data used for targeted advertising comes from data brokers who compile and sell your personal information. Opting out of ad platforms is important, but to truly reduce your advertising footprint, you need to cut off the data supply.
PrivacyOn removes your personal information from 100+ data brokers — the same companies that sell your data to advertisers. By eliminating your profiles from these databases, PrivacyOn reduces the amount of personal data available for ad targeting at its source, giving you a level of privacy that browser settings alone can't achieve.
