How to Opt Out of Experian

Experian is one of the three major credit bureaus, but it is also one of the largest data brokers in the world. Beyond maintaining your credit report, Experian sells consumer data segments to marketers, operates targeted advertising platforms, and provides data analytics services to businesses. This guide covers every opt-out method available to limit how Experian uses and shares your personal information.

What Data Does Experian Collect and Sell?

Experian holds two broad categories of data about you:

  • Credit report data: Your credit accounts, payment history, balances, credit inquiries, and public records like bankruptcies
  • Marketing and consumer data: Demographics, purchasing behavior, lifestyle interests, vehicle ownership, property data, and online activity profiles

Experian's marketing data division, Experian Marketing Services, sells detailed consumer profiles to advertisers for targeted campaigns. This is separate from your credit report and has its own opt-out process.

Option 1: Opt Out of Pre-Screened Credit Offers

Pre-screened offers are those unsolicited credit card, loan, and insurance mailers you receive. They are generated from lists that Experian and the other credit bureaus sell to lenders.

  1. Visit OptOutPrescreen.com: Go to optoutprescreen.com, the official opt-out site managed jointly by Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
  2. Choose 5-year or permanent:
    • 5-year opt-out: Complete the online form. This takes effect within approximately 5 days at Experian, though it may take several weeks before the volume of offers noticeably decreases.
    • Permanent opt-out: Print and mail the permanent election form for lifetime removal.
  3. Call instead: You can also call 1-888-567-8688 to opt out by phone.

Offers May Continue for Weeks

Even though Experian processes the opt-out within about 5 days, pre-screened offers may continue arriving for several weeks or even months. This is because many offers were generated from lists pulled before your opt-out took effect. The volume should gradually decrease over time.

Option 2: Opt Out of Marketing Data Sharing

To stop Experian from selling your data to marketers and other third parties, you have three contact methods:

  • By email: Send an opt-out request to optout@experian.com. Include your full name, address, and a clear statement that you want to opt out of data sharing for marketing purposes.
  • By phone: Call 1-833-210-4615 and request removal from marketing data products.
  • By mail: Send a written request to Experian, P.O. Box 703, Allen, TX 75013. Include your full name, current and recent addresses, and your request to opt out.

Experian applies a "Do Not Target" marking to your profile, which tells their marketing division to exclude you from data products sold to advertisers.

Warning: The "Do Not Target" Marking Expires

Experian's "Do Not Target" designation lasts only 5 years. After that, your data becomes available for marketing purposes again unless you renew the opt-out. Set a calendar reminder to resubmit your request before the 5-year mark to maintain continuous protection.

Option 3: Opt Out of Targeted Advertising

Experian operates online advertising platforms that use your data to serve targeted ads across the web. To opt out of this specifically:

  1. Visit the consumer privacy portal: Go to consumerprivacy.experian.com and submit an opt-out request.
  2. Use the Marketing Services opt-out: Go to experianmarketingservices.digital/OptOut to specifically opt out of Experian's digital advertising targeting.

Keep in mind that these online advertising opt-outs are often cookie-based. If you clear your browser cookies, use a different browser, or switch devices, the opt-out may be lost and you will need to repeat the process.

Option 4: Freeze Your Credit (Strongly Recommended)

A credit freeze prevents new creditors from accessing your Experian credit report, which stops most forms of identity theft that involve opening new accounts in your name.

  1. Go to: experian.com/help/credit-freeze/
  2. Create or sign in to your Experian account: You will need to verify your identity.
  3. Toggle the security freeze on: The freeze takes effect immediately and is completely free.
  4. Save your PIN: You will receive a PIN or credentials that you need to temporarily lift the freeze when applying for new credit.

Summary of All Opt-Out Methods

Here is a quick reference of every Experian opt-out channel:

  • Pre-screened offers: optoutprescreen.com or 1-888-567-8688
  • Marketing data sharing: optout@experian.com, 1-833-210-4615, or mail to P.O. Box 703, Allen, TX 75013
  • Targeted advertising: consumerprivacy.experian.com or experianmarketingservices.digital/OptOut
  • Credit freeze: experian.com/help/credit-freeze/

Important Limitations

  • You cannot delete your credit report. As long as lenders report your account activity, Experian will maintain a file on you. Opt-outs cover marketing and advertising uses of your data, not the credit reporting function.
  • Cookie-based opt-outs are fragile. Online advertising opt-outs that rely on browser cookies will reset whenever you clear cookies. Consider using a browser extension that preserves opt-out cookies, or revisit the opt-out pages periodically.
  • Freeze all three bureaus. A freeze at Experian alone leaves you exposed at Equifax and TransUnion. Freeze your credit at all three bureaus for complete protection against unauthorized credit applications.
  • Opt-outs have expiration dates. The "Do Not Target" marking and the electronic pre-screened opt-out both expire after 5 years. Only the mailed permanent opt-out form for pre-screened offers is truly permanent.

Credit bureau opt-outs are an important piece of the privacy puzzle, but they only cover one category of data exposure. PrivacyOn complements these steps by handling opt-outs across 100+ people-search sites and data brokers that publish your personal information online, providing continuous monitoring to catch new exposures as they appear.
