Temu has exploded in popularity since its 2022 U.S. launch, reaching over 240 million active users globally by 2026. But the bargain-priced shopping app comes with serious privacy concerns. The FTC has issued formal warnings about Temu's data handling practices, class action lawsuits are piling up, and security researchers have raised red flags about the app's extensive data collection. If you use Temu or are considering it, here's what you need to know to protect your privacy.

What Data Does Temu Collect?

Temu's data collection goes well beyond what's necessary for an online shopping experience. According to its privacy policy and independent security audits, the app collects:

  • Personal identifiers — name, email, phone number, shipping and billing addresses
  • Payment information — credit card numbers, bank account details
  • Device data — device model, operating system, unique device identifiers, IP address, mobile carrier
  • Browsing behavior — search queries, products viewed, time spent on pages, click patterns
  • Location data — GPS location, Wi-Fi access points, cell tower data
  • Contacts and social connections — if permission is granted, Temu can access your phone's contact list
  • Photos and media — if permission is granted for product reviews or customer support

Cross-Border Data Transfers

Temu's privacy policy states that personal data may be transferred to and processed in China, Singapore, the United States, and other jurisdictions where PDD Holdings operates. Unlike Amazon or Target, Temu does not make regional data residency commitments, meaning your data could be stored and processed in countries with different privacy standards than the U.S.

Why Temu's Privacy Practices Are Concerning

FTC Warnings

In early 2026, the Federal Trade Commission issued a formal warning letter to Temu citing inadequate transparency in cross-border data transfers. This was the third such notice since the app's U.S. launch, indicating a pattern of privacy concerns that the company has not adequately addressed.

Extensive Data Retention

Temu retains your data for 36 months after account deletion unless you submit a separate GDPR or CCPA erasure request. Simply deleting the app or your account does not actually delete your data from their servers.

Data Minimization Failures

Security researchers found that behavioral event streams sent to Google BigQuery included device IDs linked to unhashed email addresses in 12% of sampled batches, violating basic data minimization principles.

Ongoing Litigation

Temu is currently involved in several class action lawsuits related to its consumer data collection and sharing practices, indicating that privacy advocates believe the company's practices violate consumer protection laws.

How to Protect Your Privacy on Temu

1. Limit App Permissions

When you install Temu, deny all optional permissions:

  • Location — Temu doesn't need your GPS location to ship you products. Deny location access entirely
  • Contacts — There's no reason for a shopping app to access your contact list
  • Photos/Camera — Only grant temporarily if you need to upload a photo for a customer support issue, then revoke immediately
  • Notifications — Disable push notifications to reduce tracking and persuasive marketing

2. Use a Separate Email and Phone Number

Create a dedicated email address just for Temu (using an alias service like SimpleLogin or Apple's Hide My Email). If possible, use a secondary phone number. This prevents Temu from connecting your shopping account to your primary digital identity.

3. Use a Virtual Credit Card

Services like Privacy.com, your bank's virtual card feature, or Apple Pay let you create disposable card numbers for online purchases. This prevents Temu from storing your real credit card information and limits your financial exposure if their systems are compromised.

4. Don't Log In With Social Accounts

Temu offers the option to sign in with Google, Facebook, or Apple. Always create a standalone Temu account with a dedicated email instead. Social login gives Temu access to profile information from those platforms and creates a data connection between your accounts.

5. Shop in a Browser Instead

Using Temu's website in a privacy-focused browser like Firefox or Brave instead of the mobile app significantly limits the data they can collect. Mobile apps can access device sensors, unique identifiers, and other data that websites cannot. Use private browsing mode and clear cookies after each session.

Consider Whether Temu Is Worth the Risk

Before shopping on Temu, ask yourself whether the savings are worth the privacy tradeoff. The data Temu collects about your shopping habits, location, device, and browsing behavior has a real value, and you're paying for those discounts with your personal information. Established retailers with stronger privacy commitments may charge slightly more but collect significantly less data.

6. Submit a Data Deletion Request

If you've used Temu in the past and want to limit your exposure, you can submit a data deletion request:

  1. Open the Temu app or website and go to Settings
  2. Navigate to the Privacy section
  3. Look for "Delete My Data" or "Data Subject Request" options
  4. Submit a deletion request specifying you want all data removed

If you're a California resident, you can submit a CCPA deletion request for stronger legal backing. Remember that simply deleting your account doesn't delete your data — you must submit a separate erasure request.

7. Monitor Your Accounts After Shopping

After making purchases on Temu, monitor your credit card and bank statements for unauthorized charges. Enable transaction alerts so you're notified of any suspicious activity immediately.

Broader Privacy Protection

Shopping on platforms like Temu is just one of the many ways your personal data gets collected and distributed online. Data brokers aggregate information from shopping activity, public records, social media, and data breaches to build comprehensive profiles that are sold to marketers, insurance companies, and anyone willing to pay.

PrivacyOn helps you take back control by removing your personal information from 100+ data broker sites, monitoring the dark web for leaked credentials, and providing ongoing protection with 24/7 monitoring. Family plans cover up to 5 people, starting at just $8.33 per month — far less than the hidden cost of your personal data being sold and resold across the internet.
